SECOND NARROWS BRIDGE, VANCOUVER, BC   Highway Bridges and Related Structures

Project Description

The Second Narrows Bridge has a main span of 335 m and approach spans of 1300 m.
QR Engineering designed a combination gantry crane with travelers and spider platforms to travel along the underside of the bridge deck. This facilitated the removal and replacement of almost 400 tones of major structural steel cross bracing and sixteen large seismic isolation bearings. This eliminated the inconvenience to traffic, expensive and safety concerns of all night lane closures while allowing the work to proceed during regular working hours. Jacks ranging from 300 to 500 tonn capacity were utilized to install these bearings.
Almost 1000 m3 of concrete was required to reinforce the existing pedestals located at the base of the 2 main piers with concrete being placed around the clock from multiple concrete pumps located on barges while attended by tugs with ready-mix trucks also on barges.
